You are looking at a VERY RARE Moluccan Island figure; possibly Tanimbar? from the 19th century ( AT LEAST ); this figure is extremely OLD -12" ~ ; from a private collection.
Carved from IRON HARD WOOD; this is pure power through cubism. The figure has obvious qualities of a powerful human being; but when you look at photo #6; one sees a slight simian influence; almost Gorilla like with its prognathic jaw and its powerful wide chest. There is good use of negative space and the adze marks are visible all over the figure. The patina is deep with areas of encrustation; and the exposed wood shows extreme oxidation from its early creation date. One arm is missing but I have a feeling this was done on purpose; perhaps to "de-commission" the piece? It doesn't effect the figure aesthetically in my opinion too much because of its rarity and strong minimalist design. A very archaic rare work!
