A large and unusual greenstone maori tiki that measures c. 11cm in length and is quite thick c.1cm. The front is well carved with the back unworked and uneven. May have been carved from a broken adze based on the tapering ends? Feel free to make an offer on this piece.
On Jul-31-10 at 02:07:27 PDT, seller added the following information:
This tiki is made from Nephrite. A helpful person e-mailed me the following information that Nephrite is 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale while glass is approx 5.5 therefore nephrite cannot be scratched by glass. I tested this by using the base of a glass bottle and the base of the tiki resulting in two good scratches on the bottle and no marks on the tiki. Im sure its not a valid scientific result but it does prove that it is not serpentine which is c.4.0 on the Mohs scale.
A tiki can be viewed on the Museum of Auckland Te Papa Tongarewa that is simialar in form and style to this.
Its details are as follows
Title: Hei tiki, unknown carver, Westland source for material 104mm length x 53mm x 15mm thick.
Registration number ME008100
Attributed to the Te Huringa1style 1800-1900
If further photos are wanted feel free to request them with a email address to send them to.
